5 gorgeous cable stitches for chic knits

The best way to stay warm and look terrific is to wear knits with cables. Here are most interesting cable stitch patterns from our stitch pattern library. These cables would look awesome on a scarf, hat or a sweater and will definitely keep you warm and cozy.

Cable :: 2

This stitch pattern will make a nice shrug, scarf or sweater. It will also look great as a substitute for a 5x5 ribbing on a collar or edge.

Cast on a multiple of 10 stitches. Add 2 more selvage stitches if you want to make a nice-looking edge.
Row 1 (right side): *p3, k5, p2*, repeat from * to * to end
Row 2 (wrong side): *k2, p5, k3*, repeat from * to * to end.
Row 3 (right side): work as row 1.
Row 4 (wrong side): work as row 2.
Row 5 (right side): *p3, slip 1 stitch knitwise with yarn at back of the work, k4, p2*, repeat from * to * to end.
Row 6 (wrong side): *k2, p4, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front of the work, k3*, repeat from * to * to end.

Row 7 (right side): *p3, slip 1 stitch to a cable needle and hold it to the front of the work, knit 4 stitches, return the slipped stitch to the left needle and knit it, p2*, repeat from * to * as necessary.
Row 8 (wrong side): work as row 2.
Row 9 (right side): work as row 1.
Row 10 (wrong side): work as row 2.
Row 11 (right side): *p3, k4, slip 1 stitch knitwise with yarn at back of the work, p2*, repeat from * to * to end.
Row 12 (wrong side): *k2, slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front of the work, p4, k3*, repeat from * to * as necessary.
Row 13 (right side): *p3, slip 4 stitches to a cable needle and hold them to the back of the work, knit 1 stitch, return the slipped stitches to the left needle and knit them, p2*, repeat from * to * as necessary.
Row 14 (wrong side): work as row 2.
Row 15 (right side): work as row 1.
Row 16 (wrong side): work as row 2.

Cable :: 5

This pattern is perfect for a cardigan, a hat or a scarf, in fact, for any knits :-). It makes a nice soft not-too-bulky and nice-looking fabric. And it is reversible. Great source of inspiration.

Cast on a multiple of 6 stitches. Add 2 selvage stitches if you want to make a nice-looking edge.

Work all right side rows according to the chart. Pattern repeat is marked by red frame. In every wrong side row work sts as they present themselves, sts that are slipped in right side rows should be slipped purlwise (yarn in front of the work) in wrong side rows.

Repeat rows 3-26 as necessary for completing your project.

Cable :: 6

With this pattern you can easily decorate your ribbing with tiny cables. Use it as an accent or as an all-over pattern for a hat, scarf or sweater. 
 
Cast on a multiple of 8 stitches. Add 2 selvage stitches if you want to make a nice-looking edge.

Row 1 (right side): *k1, p2, k2, p2, k1*, repeat from * to * to end.
Row 2 and every wrong side row: work sts as they appear (knit those stitches that look like knit and purl those that look like purl).
Row 3 (right side): *k1, p2, slip 1 st to a cable needle and hold it to the back of the work, k1, return the slipped stitch to the left needle and knit it, p2, k1*, repeat from * to * as necessary.
Repeat rows 1-4 as necessary for completing your project.

Cable :: 7

This stitch pattern will make any sweater, cowl or scarf outstanding. It has soft texture and stylish cable twists that are perfect for a warm cozy knits.

Cast on a multiple of 15 stitches. Add 2 selvage stitches if you want to make a nice-looking edge.

Rows 1, 3 (right side): knit across the row.
Row 2 and every wrong side row: purl across the row.
Row 5 (right side): *make a 10 sts left cable (slip 5 sts to a cable needle and hold them to the front of the work, k5, return the slipped sts to the left needle and knit them), k5*, repeat from * to * as necessary.
Rows 7, 9 (right side): knit across the row.
Row 11 (right side): *k5, make a 10 sts right cable (slip 5 sts to a cable needle and hold them to the back of the work, k5, return the slipped sts to the left needle and knit them)*, repeat from * to * as necessary.

Cable :: 8

This beautiful stitch looks exactly like a knit braid. Made with a series of cable twists it will decorate any knit creation.

Cast on a multiple of 20 + 2 stitches. Add 2 selvage stitches if you want to make a nice-looking edge.

Row 1 (right side): *p2, k18*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, p2.
Row 2 and every wrong side row: *k2, p18*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, k2.
Row 3 (right side): *p2, k3, 9 sts right cable, k6*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, p2.
Row 5 (right side): *p2, 9 sts right cable, k9*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, p2.
Row 7 (right side): *p2, k18*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, p2.
Row 9 (right side): *p2, k6, 9 sts left cable, k3*, repeat from * to * to last 2 stitches, p2.
